18th July – Training and Grading with Sensei Bob Rhodes (8th Dan) – Crawley
On Thursday evening, IchiBan Karate hosted Sensei Bob Rhodes for a training and grading session. The training session focused on basics, especially timing and focus of techniques and then moved on to basic ippon kumite. This was followed by the grading. Congratulations to the following:
Glen and Alfie – both double graded from Novice to 8th Kyu (red belt)
Vir and Neha – both now 4th Kyu (purple and white belt)
Katarina – Now 2nd Kyu (brown and white belt)
29th June – National Youth Championships – Chesterfield
On the hottest day of the year so far, the KUGB held its National Youth Championships at the Leisure Centre in Chesterfield. The standard of the participants was as high as ever. Congratulations to Katarina Manojlovic, who performed exceptionally well and was placed 3rd in the brown belt girls kata category.
8th June – Southern Regional Championships – Crawley
On Saturday 8th June, the KUGB held its Southern Region Championships at K2 in Crawley. The event was very well attended and everyone from IchiBan that competed did so at a very high level with some exceptional performances. The following made it through to the finals in their respective categories:
Katarina Manojlovic came 1st in the Children’s Kyu Grade Kata
Charlotte Dale came 4th in the Children’s Dan Grade Kata and 1st in the Girls under 5’3″ Kumite Category.
Tom Dale, Charlotte and Katarina also came 2nd in the Childrens Team Kata event.
Congratulations to everyone who entered. You did your senseis and club proud.
19th May – Referees and Judges Course – Chesterfield
Congratulations to Valerie Dale, who, on the 19th May passed her referees exam at Chesterfield under Senseis Andy Sherry (9th Dan) and Bob Poynton (8th Dan). This was a long and intense process consisting of a written exam to test the understanding of the competition rules and decision making criteria and practical tests. Very well done Val, from all at IchiBan.
2nd February – Central Region Kata Squad Selection – Loughborough
On Saturday 2nd February, 6 members of Ichiban travelled to Loughborough for the first Central Region Kata Squad session of the year. This is a training squad for those wanting to push themselves to improve their technical knowledge and performance of kata. The sessions are held in the central region but are open to all KUGB members. Those attending must pass a selection process which involves performace of a kata, and once accepted on to the squad, continue on to to the first training session of the year. Senseis Robin, Valerie, Carl and Su were all successful in this years selection by Sensei Frank Brennan (8th Dan), as were Tom and Charlotte Dale. Well done to all.
26th/27th January – KUGB England Squad Selection – Liverpool
On Saturday the 26th January, the selection for the Kata Squad took place at the famous Red Triangle Dojo in Liverpool. Both Tom Dale and Charlotte Dale attended and were chosen by Sensei Andy Sherry (9th Dan and KUGB Chief Instructor) to be part of the 2019 squad.
On Sunday 27th January, the selection for the Kumite Squad took place in Liverpool. Charlotte Dale was also successful in being chosen as part of the Junior Kumite Squad for 2019 by Sensei Andy Sherry (9th Dan) and Sensei Frank Brennan (8th Dan).
Congratulations to both of you on your acheivement.

22nd November – Training and Grading with Sensei Bob Rhodes
On the 22nd November, Ichiban were proud to host Sensei Bob Rhodes – 8th Dan for training sessions and grading. Everyone who graded were successful in achieving their next grade.
Camden achieved 8th Kyu (red belt)
Petar achieved 6th Kyu (green belt)
Vir and Neha achieved 5th Kyu (purple belt)
Isobel achieved 4th Kyu (purple and white belt)
Katarina acheived 3rd Kyu (brown belt).

3rd November – Competition Success – Shotokan Tigers
Chelmsford Karate Club held their Shotokan Tigers competition on the first Saturday in November. This competition is for children only and is perfect for those new to competition or wanting to get some addtional practice/experience in a friendly, supportive environment. Congratulations to everyone from Ichiban who competed, and to the following who made it to the finals of their events:
Katarina – 1st in individual kata
Charlotte – 3rd in individual kata
Vir – 3rd in ippon kumite
10th August – Grading Success – Lancaster Residential Course
After a week of intense training at the KUGB residential summer course in Lancaster, Charlotte Dale took a grading for her next belt, the coverted Black Belt. She passed with flying colours and even got called back up to assist as a sparring partner for an existing black belt going for her 2nd Dan! Congratulations Lottie. We are all very proud of you.
30th June – KUGB National Youth Championships
On the 30th June, The KUGB held it’s National Youth Championships in Chesterfield. A small group from Ichiban braved the four hour journey to compete. All performed to an exceptionally high standard with two being placed in their respective categories. Charlotte came 2nd in the Girls Brown Belt Kata category and Katarina came 3rd in the Girls Novice to 4th Kyu Kata category. Well done to both of you.
9th June – Southern Regional Championships
The KUGB held it’s Southern Regional Championships in Reading on the 9th June. All competitors that took part from IchiBan did exceptionally well. Tom and Charlotte Dale both made it through to the finals. Tom came 2nd in the boys 5′ – 5’5″ individual kumite (sparring) event and Charlotte came first in both the childrens kyu grade kata and girls under 5’3″ individual kumite events. Congratulations to you both.
13th May – Referees and Judges Course and Exam – Chesterfield
Congratulations to Sensei Carl who successfully acheived his referees qualification at the course held in Chesterfield. This was an intense day consisting of both theory and practical exams. Examiners were Sensei Andy Sherry (9th Dan) and Sensei Bob Poynton (8th Dan).
5th May – Competition Success – National Championships – Leicester
A small team from IchiBan entered the KUGB’s 52nd National Championships held at the Morningside Arena in Leicester. All performed exceptionally well, making it through a number of rounds in the eliminations. Charlotte Dale made it through to the finals and came 1st in the children’s Kata category. Congratulations Charlotte on an excellent performance.
24th March – Shotokan Tigers Competition – Chelmsford
On the 24th March, Chelmsford Karate Club held their Shotokan Tigers Competition. This event is to give under 16’s an opportunity to experience and take part in competition in a small, friendly environment. 6 members of IchiBan took part in both Kata (forms) and basic Ippon Kumite (one step sparring) events. Everyone from the club performed extremely well and the following were placed in their events:
Neha – 4th in individual kata
Vir – 1st in individual kata
Katarina – 4th in individual kata
Charlotte – 4th in individual kata
Tom – 4th in individual kata and 2nd in ippon kumite
27th January 2018 – KUGB National Kata Squad Selection
On the 27th January, the KUGB held the selection process for members of the England Kata Squad in Liverpool at the Red Triangle. A big congratulations to Tom Dale, who was selected as part of this year’s squad.

4th November – Shotokan Tigers Competition – Chelmsford
On the 4th November, Chelmsford Karate Club held their annual children’s competition (Shotokan Tigers). A number of karateka from IchiBan entered the competition. All performed exceptionally well and we are proud to announce that everyone who entered came away with at least one medal.
- Tom Dale – 1st Place in Kumite and 2nd Place in Kata.
- Charlotte Dale – 1st Place in Kata.
- Katarina Manojlovic – 4th Place in Kata.
- Ben Campbell, Charlotte Dale and Ethan Henrey – 2nd Place in Team Kata.
This is a testament to the high standards at IchiBan and the hard work that they all put into their training. Congratulations to all – we are very proud of you!
14th September- Grading Success
Congratulations to the following who were successful at achieving their next grade at the training and grading session held at the IchiBan dojo in Crawley with Sensei Bob Rhodes (8th Dan).
Ella Henrey and Petar Manojlovic both achieved Orange Belt (9th Kyu). Julian Henrey achieved Green Belt (6th Kyu) and Katarina Manojlovic, Purple Belt (5th Kyu). Ethan Henrey passed 3rd Kyu (brown belt) and Ben Campbell 2nd Kyu (brown and white belt).
11th August – Grading Success – Lancaster Residential Course
After a week of intense training at the KUGB residential summer course in Lancaster, Charlotte Dale and Tom Dale took a grading for their next belts. Both passed with flying colours and received high praise on their exceptional performances from the senior instructors and grading panel. Charlotte passed her 2nd Kyu (Brown and White Belt) and Tom passed his Shodan grading (Black Belt). Congratulations to you both. We are all very proud of you.
1st July – Competition Success – National Youth Championships – Chesterfield
A small team from IchiBan entered the KUGB’s Youth Championships held in Chesterfield. All performed exceptionally well with Charlotte Dale coming 3rd in her Kata category and Tom Dale coming 1st in his Kata category. Congratulations to you both.
11th June – Competition Success – Open Competition – Seaford
On the 11th June, members of IchiBan competed in an open competition held in Seaford. All the hard work and effort put in during the training sessions on the lead up to the competition paid off and everyone produced their best performances to date, be that in Kata or Kumite. IchiBan we placed in a number of categories. Well done to all.
- Charlotte Dale came 2nd in the Children’s Individual Kata (3rd kyu and above)
- Ethan Henrey came 2nd in the Children’s Individual Kata (9-10 years old, 5th kyu and above)
- Julian Henrey came 2nd in the Adult Male Kata (novice to 7th kyu)
- Tom Dale came 3rd in the Boys Kumite (10-12 years old).
- Julian and Ethan Henrey came 2nd in Parent and Child Kata
- Tom and Charlotte Date came 2nd in the Pairs Kata (3rd kyu and above).

3rd June – Grading Success – Brighton
Congratulations to Ethan who passed his 4th Kyu grading with Sensei Bob Rhodes (8th Dan), at the course and training held be Seishin in Brighton.
6th May – Competition Success – National Championships – Birmingham
A small team from IchiBan entered the KUGB’s national championships held at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. All performed exceptionally well, making it through a number of rounds in the eliminations. Tom Dale made it through to the finals and came 2nd in the children’s Kata category.
23rd April – Grading Success – Special Dan Course – Chesterfield
Congratulations to Sensei Carl who passed his 5th Dan grading at the Special Dan Course in Chesterfield in front of a panel of the KUGB’s top instructors (Sensei Andy Sherry – 9th Dan, Sensei Bob Poynton – 8th Dan and Sensei Frank Brennan – 8th Dan) .
14th April – Grading and Competition Success – Residential Course – Torbay
Congratulations to Ben Campbell and Charlotte Dale who both took their 3rd Kyu (brown belt) grading in front of Sensei Bob Rhodes (8th Dan) and Sensei Billy Higgins (8th Dan). You both performed extremely well. Also, well done to Charlotte Dale and Tom Dale who were both placed in the competition that is run as part of the course. Charlotte came first in her category and Tom second.
1st April – Competition Success – KUGB Southern Regional Championships
Well done to everyone who entered the Southern Regional Championships from IchiBan. You all upped your game and should be very proud of your performances. A special congratulations to Tom Dale who came 2nd in his Kata category and 1st in Kumite.
